Summer has passed, and Fall has arrived; and so do the beginning of CNY ASHRAE Programs. We are starting the year off with a tour of the Saranac Brewery in Utica, dinner will be catered by Joey’s. It should be an interesting meeting so please go to the website and sign up at your earliest convenience. We have quite a few new faces on the Board of Governors this year and we have a few famil-iar ones that you will recognize so be sure to say hello to them at the next meeting you attend.

The Chapter is having our 1st annual fall clambake on Saturday, September 23, 2017 at Swan Bay Campgrounds in Alexandria Bay from 12:00 Noon to 4pm, the cost is $40.00/pp, you can make your reservations on the website.

We will be keeping our meetings this year at the Dinosaur BBQ, with “Happy Hour”, same as last year. Membership for the Chapter improved last year under our Past President, Mark Yonnick, we are looking to keep the momentum going this year by having great YEA and Membership events.

We are hoping to have a successful year and have a fantastic line up of programs for you. So please come out and support your local chapter.

    Best Regards,

    Steven Sill,

    CNY ASHRAE Chapter President

..Adapt, Energize and Engage. This was our theme throughout the Chapter year and at times challenged both myself and the Board of Governors as we strove to create a unique environment of professional learning and camaraderie. We elected to take chances and break from the norm and slowly began to see new faces joining our ranks. I've been told over the past several months our meetings have become fun, something to look forward to and somewhere to share ideas and mutual challenges of our HVAC/R industry.

I've enjoyed speaking with our newest members, both from the Society and Student levels, as well as the familiar faces of those who've stayed true to the CNY Chapter year after year. Rest assured we are in good hands of a young and very talented Board of Governors who will undoubtedly continue to lead our Chapter in a positive trajectory and we ask you continue to give them your support and encouragement.

As I close my Presidency, I wish to thank our Members, Donors, Program Speakers, Sponsors and the Board of Governors for an inspiring year. It's been an honor to serve you and I encourage both you and your peers to continue to be in the room. I know I will.

Please view and download our April newsletter here.

What a way to start the first two days of April!!  The CNY ASHRAE Chapter hosted the first ever SmartStart Weekend for Mechanical Engineering students at the Syracuse University Center of Excellence and the event couldn’t have been any better.  I’d personally like to extend a very special thanks to Enrica Galasso (Student Activities Chair) and Matt Clark (Young Engineers in ASHRAE Chair) for spearheading this remarkable weekend and there is no doubt this event wouldn’t have happened had it not been for their extreme dedication and organization.  We were honored to host not one, but two ASHRAE Society Distinguished Lecturers for this event as Society Past-President David Underwood and his wife Jane joined us for the entire weekend (my wife Linda and I had the honor of joining them for dinner at the SmartStart Dinner in Armory Square) followed by Jorge Hernadez mesmerizing the students during Day 2 of the program.  Please read more about this incredible weekend in the upcoming April newsletter and Enrica and Matt will provide a brief summary at the April 12 Chapter Dinner Meeting.

Speaking of the April meeting, we have a packed agenda:

    • Please help us welcome Mr. Bill Pearson of Special Pathogens Laboratory as he discusses ASHRAE Standard 188 Legionella for the Main Program (1 PDH credit).  This topical discussion is relevant for all who design, manage or maintain Healthcare and Higher Education facilities.
    • In addition, we’ll be honoring Mr. Chris Martin as this year’s recipient of the Member Recognition Award for his continued service to ASHRAE and our CNY Chapter.
    • The newly proposed Board of Governors and Officers for the 2017-2018 Chapter Year is noted in the newsletter and we welcome your comments.  As is customary, the BoG and Officers Slate will be inducted at the final May 10th  Chapter Dinner Meeting.
    • Please thank Geoff Sincavage and Johnson Controls Inc. as this month’s sponsors of the ever popular Social Happy Hour from 5:30 – 7:00pm.  The beer is FREE and the conversation is too.

Key note:  Given our heavy meeting agenda, we plan to forgo this month’s Technical Session presentation but will resume again at the final May 10th Chapter Dinner Meeting.

Thank you as always and we look forward to you,.. “being in the room”.

Spring appears to be in the air, temperatures are climbing and the days are slowly getting longer. These are sure signs Winter is coming to an end and acts as subtle signals the current Chapter year will begin to draw to a close. Rest assured however we are firing on all cylinders and continue to pack the closing months with new and exciting events. This month we embark on our Dual Technical Session & Main Program schedule where engineers can earn two (2) PDH credits in one meeting. The Technical Session coincides with our ever popular Social Happy Hour so grab a beer on us while you earn a PDH credit.

April kicks off with ASHRAE Society's first ever SmartStart Weekend aimed at recruiting the next generation of ASHRAE members, followed by our monthly program meeting featuring a review of ASHRAE Standard 188 Legionella.

May is our last program meeting for the year and we welcome ASHRAE Society Distinguished Lecturer Chuck Gulledge who will discuss Integrated Building Design.

As always, we close the Chapter year in June with our golf outing and legendary Clambake on June 8th.

We hope you join us for these events and help the Chapter (and Region 1) finish strong. Thank you for your continued support.

Please click here to view our February 2017 Newsletter.

It’s hard to believe we’re half way through the 2016-2017 ASHRAE year and judging from your comments, it’s been a successful several months. As a Chapter, we’ve enjoyed tours of the Carrier Dome and new OCM BOCES Liverpool facility, held three Young Engineers of America events at the 315 Brewery in Camillus, a bowling outing at Revolutions and most recently a Syracuse University basketball game in the graciously donated Carrier Box as well as a successful transition to the Dinosaur BBQ location for our monthly Program Meetings. Additionally our Student Activities program is running on all cylinders as they prepare to launch ASHRAE’s first ever SmartStart Weekend April 1-2 at the Syracuse University Center of Excellence. Past Society President David Underwood has committed to attend and speak at the event as we aim to recruit the next generation of HVAC/R engineers. I’m confident you’ll find the second half of the year equally engaging and encourage you to participate in the coming events.

Please take note of the upcoming “ASHRAE Learning Institute 2017 Online Course Series” offering courses throughout 2017. One and Two Part courses are available and include such topics as The Commissioning Process in New and Existing Buildings and Standard 90.1 – 2016 HVAC / Mechanical Design. Additional information will be available in our newsletter, which will be posted soon.

In closing, our February 8th Evening Program Meeting is proving to be a topic of interest as Rick Siberine of Nupi Americas presents “Polypropylene PP-R and PP-RCT Pressure Pipe & Fitting Solutions”. Plastic piping is gaining acceptance as an alternative solution to traditional copper, steel and iron pipe system designs and this presentation offers 1-PDH credit. Please plan to join us in the Main Room upstairs at the Dinosaur BBQ and come early for the ever popular Social Happy Hour where drinks are on the house from 5:30 to 6:30 pm.

    The Presidents Message

Hoping everyone enjoyed their Holidays spent with family, friends and co-workers and here's to starting 2017 on a positive note.

For those who attended the OCM BOCES tour in December, we were treated to 3 distinct tours which included an overview of their unique Mechanical Room equipment, visits to many of the Adult Education programs culminating with a demonstration of the HVAC/R Programs new Hampden Refrigeration Test Board which was donated by the 2015-2016 CNY ASHRAE Chapter (see photos). A special note of thanks to Matt Tarolli, John Wisniewski and Joe Miuccio of OCM BOCES for volunteering their time to host this wonderful event.

We have a very interesting and relevant program scheduled for the January meeting as our guest speaker will be discussing Adiabatic alternative cooling. This technology is an integral part of the new Embassy Suites Hotel @ Destiny Mall property and very well may be a future CNY ASHRAE tour destination.

I look forward to seeing you all as 2017 is upon us and encourage you to participate in the many wonderful events we have planned through the rest of our Chapter year.

    The Presidents Message

November's meeting at the Dinosaur BBQ was a great success and Jody Samuell's presentation on "Air Elimination and Dirt Removal in Hydronic Systems" was very well received. Our new downtown meeting venue, 1-hour Open Bar Social and 50/50 raffle have proven to be positive moves for the Chapter as we watch attendance and membership grow.

A special thanks to Chris Devins of Trane for donating tickets to the Syracuse University men's basketball game against Holy Cross as this allowed the Chapter to retain the 50/50 raffle funds for Research & Promotion.

As Society President Tim Wentz recently put it,.. "You need to be in the room because it's where you connect with the brightest minds in the industry, where you learn from our latest research and where your membership makes a difference".

We invite you to join us for an upcoming meeting, YEA / Student Activities event or facility tour. Bring a friend or colleague, enjoy a cold beer on us and be a part of this exciting movement.

Thank you and wishing everyone a safe and happy Holiday season.

    The Presidents Message

“Adapt today to shape tomorrow”… “Energize chapters and engage members”…

These words from current Society President Tim Wentz are the marching orders for your current Chapter Officers and Board of Governors.  Hopefully those of you who’ve joined us at the Syracuse University Carrier Dome tour, YEA event at 315 Brewery or dinner meeting downtown at the Dinosaur BBQ sense our efforts to adapt, energize and engage.  We’ve made a conscious decision to try new things this year and welcome you to participate and encourage your friends and peers to join in as well.

Please plan to join us Wednesday, November 9th for our next Program & Dinner Meeting at the Dinosaur BBQ.  Jody Samuell of Caleffi will present “Solving Air, Dirt and Hydraulic Separation Problems” and has graciously offered to sponsor our 1-hour Open Bar Social from 5:30 – 6:30pm.

Also, in honor of Veteran’s Day, the Chapter will recognize veteran members for their service to our country and pay for their dinner.

November is Research Promotion Night and we plan to recognize the 2016 Clam Bake Major Door Prize donors by name and thank them for supporting ASHRAE by paying for their dinner as well.
